Spearheaded by their senior pickle ball team members, Artesia Youth Park (AYP) held their annual Pig Roast on Saturday July 20th . Using the new campaign “raise the roof” all the funds from the event will be used to help purchase a much needed new roof for the facility. “Artesia exists to provide the community with a safe environment for teenagers” Andrew Thompson explained.
With the doors opening at 5:00pm AYP supporters flooded in to make their donations. In return for their generosity they were treated to roast pig, coleslaw, corn on the cob and several side dishes. In just an hour and a half and over 150 guest later, new comers were greeted to the bitter sweet fact that the success of the fundraisers had left the food supply exhausted.
With nothing left to eat visitors headed toward the doors shortly before the start of the planned talent show. “ Next year we will be sure to have more food for this event. This event has continued to become more and more popular. We went from leftovers last year to selling out in under two hours.” JoJean Thompson proudly proclaimed.
Thompson also explained that there will be talent shows and concerts taking place throughout the year at Artesia. Upon completion of the pig roast, as well as a 50/50 drawing, 25% of the amount needed for the new roof was raised. With a new sound and light set up, these concerts and talent shows will continue to put a dent in the new roofs cost.
